Avon Book

Avon Book is a small bookshop that specialises in used books. It also has a modest collection of new books.

Avon was founded in 1941 to compete with Pocket Books as a publisher of paperbacks. They published a wide range of titles, including westerns and mysteries with colorful covers. These were popular pulp novels, far away from the literary Pocket Books in terms of the appeal to readers.

The Story

In the beginning, Avon was a door-to-door book salesman called David H. McConnell, who used a popular gimmick to convince women to listen to his pitch for the books of his company. He offered to give his customers a small bottle perfume (named in honor of the Shakespearean town of Stratford-on-Avon) in exchange for just a few minutes to listen to him discuss his publications.

The perfume was a hit, and soon Avon was making more money from it than from its books. This allowed the company expand and improve its facilities as well as to develop other products like makeup, skincare, and even fragrances for men. Avon was capable of investing in charitable projects such as helping women find work and tackling domestic violence.

Avon publishes primarily romance novels. It also publishes fiction on occasion. HarperCollins owns Harlequin and Avon. Until the mid-90s, Avon was owned by the Hearst Corporation, which is now part of Newscorp.

The acquisition of Newscorp in 1999 of Hearst Publishing led to a decision to focus solely on romance and to eliminate the other genres. In the 2000s, Avon has specialized in historical romance, and has been described as "the house that history built." Authors like Lisa Kleypas, Connie Mason, Stephanie Laurens, Julia Quinn, and Beverly Jenkins have published their work through the company.

In recent years, Avon has moved into digital publishing. Avon has a digital magazine, AVON Style and an app for people to purchase its books on-the-go. Avon also organizes live shopping events on Facebook, YouTube and other social media. Avon offers discounts and free items to its customers at these events. Avon also gives members the opportunity to earn money selling Avon products to other people. This is particularly beneficial to those new to the business as they can start with a low investment and grow their sales quickly. This allows them to test their marketing skills without committing any resources.

Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams founded the company in the early days, focusing on reprints in pocket-sized paperbacks. They referred to it as Avon. The company was a major competitor to Pocket Books and its early Avons were similar in appearance to Pocket's, leading the latter to attempt an action against Avon but without success.

Avon could then concentrate on the popular market and ensure that every new book was well-received. This led them into publishing ghost stories, sexually suggestive love stories, and fantasy novels that were far removed in tone from the more literary Pocket competition.

Avon also published digest-sized paperbacks in series such as Modern Short Story Monthly and Avon Fantasy Reader, a collection that is still popular today. These were often accompanied with tie-ins with movies. Avon also published non-romance hardcover paperbacks, but these were transferred by Hearst Corporation to Morrow's second publisher after Hearst purchased Avon in the year 1959.

In this book, Darrow creates an interesting background for Avon and imitates the lively style of dialogue that Blake's 7 was known for pretty well, but unless are a fan of the show it's probably not for you. The relationship between Avon and Vila is the main focus of the story and they clearly have a common respect for each other but an intense dislike for their cowardice and ruthlessness.
