The majority of robotic vacuums require regular maintenance. This involves emptying the bin (and sometimes rinsing it) and cleaning the cameras and sensors. They also need to be connected. A lot of them have apps for smartphones for scheduling, setting up settings and more.

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the most recent in the line of top-of-the-line robotic vacuum cleaners that are a staple of every modern household. This model is extremely powerful suction as well as a HEPA filter that will help anyone concerned about allergies. It also comes with an extremely powerful battery that can clean for two hours before returning to its dock automatically once the bin is full.

Smart mapping is another feature that allows it to identify areas in your home that require attention, and then creates a cleaning path to get around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a good job of moving around toys abandoned on the floor or furniture legs that stick out from under the furniture. It also has a camera sensor that will snap the Roomba back to reality when it starts to drift away from its original location.

iRobot has also introduced a new set of rollers under the Roomba's bottom that don't have bristles and therefore tend to resist tangles more than the previous models. In our tests of its performance it was found that the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. It scored very well on carpets with a low pile, and on mid-pile. It did a great job getting rid of pet hair, but struggled with long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

Despite these small shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our top-performing robots, and it's even close to being as expensive as the other top-of-the-line models on this list. It still has a lot of features we'd expect to see in a top-of-the-line model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integration you might find in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and start working immediately. After taking the yellow bin insert and battery pull tab from the undercarriage, it is simply connected to an outlet on the wall or to its Home Base docking stations, click the "Clean button" and let it do the job. It will automatically return to the dock when it runs out of batteries or is full of sand. There are also indicators on top that indicate when the bin is empty, when it needs to recharge, or when it loses Wi-Fi.
