1. Sony WH-1000XM4 buy wireless headphones

Sony has improved on an already excellent pair of headphones with the WH-1000XM4 Wireless. They are lighter, better built and feature a more balanced audio profile (though bass-heavy). They also have an app that lets you customize the audio. Their active noise cancelling performs even better than before, removing more ambient sound, and they have a longer continuous battery life than many competitors.

These headphones use Bluetooth 5.0 which supports SBC, AAC, and Sony's own LDAC codec. This codec can transmit high-resolution audio, however, you'll need compatible devices and streaming service. The WH-1000XM4s is also able to connect two Bluetooth devices simultaneously and automatically switch between the two when required. This feature can be enabled through the Sony Headphones Connect app and it works flawlessly.

The touch panels are more sensitive than the XM3. They respond faster to tapping on the panel and are much easier to manage when making a phone call or listening to music. Sony has also added an option that makes voices sound clearer and more precise on calls which is noticeable and a nice touch.

While the WH-1000XM4s aren't perfect, they're one of the best wireless headphones we've tested. They are comfortable and well-constructed, and come with a a battery that can last for more than 30 continuous hours. They can be used passively by using the TRS cable. This is great for traveling or conserving power.

The WH1000XM4s provide a superior alternative to the Bowers & Wilkins Wireless Over-Ears Px7 S2. The Sonys are more comfortable and their ANC can block out more ambient noise. They also have an app that lets you alter their audio performance, Bluetooth headphonea and their EQ settings are more flexible than B&W's. However, the B&Ws have more robust design and they're able to connect with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. In addition, they support aptX HD, and they have an AI-driven engine which attempts to boost compressed music to high-resolution. This is called DSEE Extreme and it does well in improving the clarity of music, particularly when listening to lossless audio files.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort 45 noise-canceling headphones are the latest iteration of a headset that became a staple for commuters and travelers from all over the world. The new model doesn't reinvent the wheel. It uses the same formula which was the basis of its predecessor's success with the addition of the USB-C port and improved noise cancellation.

Like the QC 35 II before them, these over-ear Bose headphones have an elegant design and feel that exudes quality. The headband, constructed of plastic, provides a solid feel thanks to the metal hinges at pivot points. It also has the familiar ratcheting mechanism whenever you retract or extend your earcups. The cups have soft cushioned pads that are securely positioned over your ears and do not apply pressure to your head. When folded they weigh 238g. They can be paired with a sweater or coat since they can be worn even when not on the head.

Despite their reputation for comfort, the QC45s can't offer the best sound in this price range. The frequencies are fairly flat and lack the depth that headphones with higher prices might be capable of bringing out. The higher registers tend to be amplified which is great for most music genres but could be a problem for delicate or intricate genres of music. The bass is decent, but lacks the punch.

The possibility of pauseing the playback after removing the headset is a feature missing. This is a standard feature in this price range and something Bose's competitors have offered for a long time. Another omission is the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose provides preset EQ settings within the app, but it would be nice to have a manual control.

You can connect to your tablet or smartphone via Bluetooth Headphonea 5.0 with support for multipoint and the more advanced codecs such as aptX Adaptive. You can download the Bose Audio app to adjust your headset's sound and voice assistant settings.

The QC45s come with four microphones that are built-in to pick up your voice when on the phone. They have excellent call quality, but they don't let you silence the voice when playing back like other wireless headphones. Update: A firmware update for the QC45s came out in February 2022 added manual EQ options to the audio app. This is a great upgrade.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio brand that is known for high-performance headphones that provide long-lasting comfort and a design that makes listeners feel like they're listening to something truly special. The Bathys are their first blue tooth wireless headphones noise cancelling headphones. They are stunning in appearance and sound. They come with a high-performance USB DAC built in, making them suitable both for wired and wireless listening.

Focal claims that the Bathys can play Bluetooth music for up to 30 hours. We got more than 40 hours of playback on average on a single charge. If you do require a recharge, there's an indicator light on the right earcup that will turn red when the headphone has to be charged.

They have a decent amount of features for headphones at this price, including support for multiple devices at the same time and automatic pairing (though you'll need to select the source device each time you want to listen). They come with a built-in microphone that supports voice assistants like Siri or Alexa. The headphones have an easy-to navigate interface that makes it simple to control music and make calls.

For wireless headphones that are over-ear for over-ear wireless headphones, the Bathys excel in our tests of noise cancellation, which reduces the sound of the surrounding environment by about 9 decibels per hour on average. It's not as impressive as the ANC in the Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless, however it's still quite effective.

The Bathys headphones performed well in our headphone tests. Their frequency response was generally similar to the SoundGuys headphone curve, with only minor deviations in the mids and bass. The Bathys are bassy sound profile which can make instruments, vocals and cymbals look a bit veiled.

They also have excellent leakage resistance, which means you can wear them out in public without worrying about other people listening to your music. The microphone is able to be used for recording using Bluetooth with just a little distortion between the mid-treble and the treble.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless is a new update of the company's flagship Bluetooth headsets. The last pair, the Momentum 3, was a solid but unspectacular entry in the class. The new model improves on the previous model by having more sleek design, better gesture controls, and a huge battery life.

The improvements are subtle, but make for an over-ear pair of headphones that feel like an upgrade. The Momentum 4s lie flat and don't fold, but they do come with a nice hardshell case that protects them when on the move. The Momentum 4s are device-agnostic, like many other Bluetooth headphones of recent times, like those from Bowers & Wilkins and Sony. They are compatible with Apple iPhones and Android phones, but they do not have the AirPods' extra features like Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.

The most obvious improvement in this model is the huge battery, which claims up to 60 hours of playback with the noise cancellation feature turned on. This is more than twice the amount of the competitors and sufficient to allow you to travel for a longer period of time without worrying about finding an outlet.

Engadget senior editor Billy Steele gave the headphones an 82 score with a focus on their audio quality and ANC as two of their strengths. His only complaint is that they lack a sense gravitas in the mids as well as treble, meaning that orchestral music tends to sound flat rather than grand. The bass is well rounded but it can sound overemphasized, which can cause to fatigue when songs have strong bass lines, such as the drum hits in As I Lay Dying’s Forever. The cymbals sound smoky rather than full, and there's no real sense of depth in the bass.

The Momentum 4s are comfortable and shouldn't put too much pressure on your neck or ears. However, they can be uncomfortable when worn in the house or during longer listening sessions, and can move around on your head, causing intense head movements. This could cause them to wake up at random times, which can be distracting when listening to music or making calls. They shut down automatically after 15 minutes, and can be switched off manually with the power button.
