Best Over-Ear Headphones

Over-ear headphones, unlike earbuds, are able to completely encapsulate your ears. They also have larger drivers, which deliver greater bass and a wider soundstage. Many also include active noise cancellation and Bluetooth technology.

The Master & Dynamic MW65 is upgraded with improved audio, numerous ANC modes, and a long battery life.

1. Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless

Sony has made improvements to an already great pair of headphones with the WH-1000XM4 Wireless. They are less heavy, more durable, and have an audio profile that is more balanced (though bass-heavy). They also include an app that lets you customize the audio. They've upgraded their active noise cancellation, eliminating the background noise and extending the battery life.

These headphones are Bluetooth 5.0 compatible and Sony LDAC is also supported. The latter can transfer high-resolution audio, however, you'll need compatible devices and streaming service. Additionally, the WH-1000XM4s can connect to two Bluetooth devices at the same time and automatically switch between them if needed. This feature is enabled through the Sony Headphones Connect App and works well.

One of the major improvements over the XM3 is the sensitiveness of their touch panels. They respond faster to the tap of the panel, and this makes them easier to control during a call or to listen to music. Sony has also added a feature to make voices sound clearer and more precise during calls. This is a distinct and pleasant addition.

The WH-1000XM4s might not be perfect, but they're among the best wireless Wirless Headphones that we have ever examined. They are comfortable and well-constructed, and come with a a battery that can last for more than 30 continuous hours. They can also be used in a passive manner using a TRS cable, which is ideal when you're on the road or need to conserve power.

The WH-1000XM4s are better than the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2 Wireless over-ears. The Sonys are more comfortable and their ANC can block out more ambient noise. The B&Ws feature an EQ that is more flexible and an app that allows you to tweak the audio quality. The B&Ws are better built and can be paired with two bluetooth wireless headphone devices simultaneously. They also support aptXHD, and they have an AI-driven engine that attempts to increase the size of compressed music to high resolution. This is known as DSEE Extreme and it does well in improving the clarity of music, particularly when listening to lossless audio files.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort45 Noise-Canceling headset is the most current version of a headset that has become a popular choice for commuters and travelers all over the world. Rather than reinventing the wheel the new model uses the same formula that made its predecessor so popular, but adds USB-C, better noise cancellation and longer battery life.

Similar to the QC 35 II before them, these over-ear Bose headphones sport an elegant design and feel that oozes quality. The headband is made of plastic, and has a sturdy feel with hinges made of metal at the pivot points and the familiar ratcheting action that you experience when you extend or retract the earcups. The cups are cushioned and feature soft pads that can be worn over your ears without pressing your head. They weigh 238 grams and are compact when folded. You can wear them with an overcoat or sweater since the noise-canceling works even when they are not on your head.

Despite their reputation as comfortable headphones however, the QC45s don't provide the best sound at this price. The frequencies are dull and lack the detail that more expensive headphones may be able to bring out. The upper registers are boosted which is great for the majority of music but can be a problem for more delicate and intricate genres. The bass is good, but it lacks the punch.

The ability to pause the playback after removing the headset is a feature that's missing. This is a standard in this price range and is something that Bose's rivals have been offering for years. Another omission was the lack of an in-app EQ. Bose has preset EQs available in the app but it would be nice if there was an option to control the EQ manually.

You can connect to your tablet or smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0 with support for multipoint and the more advanced codecs such as aptX Adaptive. Download the Bose Audio App to adjust your headsets audio and voice settings.

The QC45s come with four microphones that are built-in to hear your voice when on the phone. The quality of calls is generally good, but the headsets don't have the nifty ability to mute your voice during playback, which is a feature that other wireless headphones do. Update: A firmware upgrade for the QC45s was released in February 2022 included manual settings for EQ to the audio app. This is a great upgrade.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio company known for high-performance headphones that last for a long time, comfort and a design that let listeners know they're listening to something unique. The Bathys are their first wireless noise cancelling headphones. They look and sound stunning. They also have an inbuilt high-performance USB DAC which means you can use them for both wireless and wired listening.

The Bathys come with a great battery performance, with Focal claiming 30 hours of continuous Bluetooth playtime. We had more than 40 hours of playback on average from just one charge. If you need to recharge, there's a light on the right ear cup that will turn red when the headphone needs to be charged.

For a pair of headphones for this price, they come with many features. They support multiple devices simultaneously and offer automatic pairing. (You will need to select the device you want to pair with by hand each time you listen.) They come with a built-in microphone that works with voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. The headphones come with an easy-to navigate interface that makes it easy to control music and make calls.

For headphones with over-ear connectivity for over-ear wireless headphones, the Bathys are very good in our test of noise cancellation. They cut down the ambient sound by about 9 decibels per hour on average. This isn't as impressive as the ANC in the Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless, but it's still pretty effective.

The Bathys headphones performed well in our headphone sound tests. Their frequency response was mostly similar to the SoundGuys headphone curve with minor variations in the mids and bass. The Bathys are bassy sound profile that can make vocals, instruments and cymbals appear veiled.

You can wear them anywhere without worrying that others will listen to your music. Their mic has passable recording quality via Bluetooth with only a slight distortion in the mid to the treble range.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless are a new version of the company's top-of-the-line Bluetooth headphones. The Momentum 3 was a solid but not an outstanding entry in this class. The new pair is a step up from the previous model, featuring more sleek design, better gesture control, and a huge battery life.

A lot of the improvements here are subtle, but they make a pair of over-ears that appear to be an upgrade from the old one. The Momentum 4s lay flat and aren't foldable however they come with a nice hardshell case to protect them while on the go. They also follow the trend of a number of other recent Bluetooth headphones, like the ones from Sony and Bowers & Wilkins, to be completely device-independent. This means they work well with both Android phones and Apple iPhones, however they don't have the extra features (like Find My support and head-tracked Spatial Audio) that you'll find on AirPods.

The biggest improvement is the battery that can last for up to 60 hours with noise cancellation on. This is more than double the amount of the competition and enough to allow you to travel for a longer period of time without having to search for an outlet.

Billy Steele, senior editor at Engadget The headphones were rated by Billy Steele, senior editor at Engadget an 82-point score. He noted their sound quality and ANC features as the top strengths. The only issue he has is that they lack a sense gravitas in the mids and the treble. This means that orchestral tracks tend to sound flat, not grand. The bass is well rounded but it can sound overemphasized, wirless Headphones which can cause to fatigue when songs have strong bass lines, such as the drum beats of As I Lay Dying’s Forever. The cymbals also sound sizzled rather than full and there's no feeling of depth in the lows.

zihnic-bluetooth-headphones-over-ear-folThe Momentum 4s are not designed to cause pressure on your neck or ear. However they can be uncomfortable when worn around the house or during longer listening sessions, and will move about on your head in a flurry of head movements. This can cause them to wake up in a sudden manner, which could be distracting when listening to music or making calls. Fortunately they shut down after 15 minutes of sleep by default, and can be manually switched off by pressing the power button.
