The XM5 headphones are no different from the previous generation of headphones from WH in terms of noise cancellation. They're among the most efficient headphones for cutting out constant drones found in underground and train carriages. The only drawback is that the XM5s lack any dust or water resistance protection. Sony recommends not sweating in them or wearing them in the rain. This might not be a big deal for the majority of people, but for those who spend a lot of time in the gym or live in a rainy location this could be a big issue.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of over-ear wireless headphones equipped with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. They have 40mm Apple-designed dynamic drivers with neutral audio profiles that is focused on the mids and highs while not going overboard on either end of the spectrum. This makes them perfect for both music and movies. They also provide better sound quality when compared with other headphones.

The headphones are light and feel comfortable on the head. The earcups are made out of memory foam that is covered in a woven fabric. They sit comfortably on the ears without putting pressure on the sides of the face. Ear cups can be rotated and tilted to accommodate different head shapes. The hinges that are spring loaded have a solid but not overly robust clamping force that makes sure that the ear cups stay in place during listening sessions.

You can toggle noise cancelling by pressing a small button at the top of the right earcup. Siri is invoked by pressing and pressing the button. The buttons are simple to use and well-placed however I would have liked to have an option to power off or turn off the headphones when not in use. The headphones go into standby when they are removed from your ears, or when they are put in their case. They come back into use when you put them on your head.

Another cool feature is spatial audio, which utilizes the accelerometers and gyroscopes in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to figure out the direction you're moving in, and then repositions sound to appear as if they're coming from those locations. This creates an immersive theater-like experience for films and videos that were recorded in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. The only downside is that spatial audio requires an iOS device to use it, and you won't be able to enjoy it with other devices.

The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd be a bit ripped off entering an Apple Store and spending $549 on the headphones if I knew that they'd be beaten in a year by the second-generation model. AirPods Pro are more expensive however they offer superior battery life and more advanced features.
