How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Audi.jpgCharles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are different pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors are not firing anymore. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero Ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and easily accessible particularly in the case of an Bosch sensor, which is what ours are. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues in your car.
