Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are several connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, but i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and replacement audi key cost both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, Replacement audi key cost etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you encounter a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. The good news is that they are very affordable and readily available, especially in the case of a Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues within your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your new audi keys because it relays information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the car's engine is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig, and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is a common part that is found across the audi a4 key replacement 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones could be available in wrecking yards.
