1. iRobot s8

This smart robot mop and vacuum combo is an excellent option for a wide range of households. It is able to vacuum and mop well and has a great navigation system that includes both GPS and laser sensors and has a wide range of features and controls available via the app. It also comes with a helpful feature that allows you to add Cleaning zones for certain areas that need extra attention and Keep Out zones that you don't want it to be. And, like all Roomba devices, it is updated with new software updates that make it even more efficient over time.

It's costly, but it's also one of the most sophisticated robot vacuums ZDNet has ever tested. It has a high-powered battery that can clean a large home in under two hours. It can switch between mopping and vacuuming with the press of a button. And unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the bin after each run, it automatically empties into a larger waste container above its charging dock.

It comes with a variety of other features that make it a good option for most homes, including intelligent obstacle avoidance that uses both a camera and processor-powered intelligents to identify obstacles. It's rarely tripped up or stuck during a cleaning cycle. In my tests it was the most effective at avoiding objects like power cables. However, it isn't as reliable at detecting pet waste and other hazards.

2. Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid

Although Anker-owned Eufy has earned a name for itself in the field of low-cost robot vacuums, it's never offered an all-in-one model that can also mop. That's changed with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive suite of advanced features that can compete against much more expensive models.

The laser navigation system is the primary selling point of this machine. The X8 makes use of laser mapping technology that is more accurate than the previous Eufy devices. It also takes significantly less time to build up an accurate picture of your home and can store multiple maps, which is great for homes with multiple floors.

The X8 is still a decent vacuum on floors with no dust, slinging debris under its side brushes and into the 400ml dust bin with relative ease. The X8's tyres, despite having a circular shape, are good in grabbing corners and edges. It's not the best mop and vacuum combo robot cat litter picker, though as our tests show it only removes about 90 percent of the fur from hard floors.

The basic mopping robot vacuum cleaner mode uses the same water reservoir as the vacuuming mode. While this is good for spills that aren't too big, you can't control how much water it consumes and this will reduce its effectiveness when dealing with more serious stains. It does a good job at picking up pet hair. It has a higher rate of pick-up than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Like iRobot's latest models like the RX2 has dual-sensor mapping technology which uses a LIDAR sensor to map a room and two 3D scanning cameras to identify and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real-time. Once the room has been defined, you can assign virtual no go areas and sections that you would like to be the robot. You can also manually change cleaning modes, start an automatic clean or see a live feed of the cameras onboard from the main screen.

The RX2 has superior sensors that can identify furniture and other obstructions in a flash. Its sweeping and suction powers are excellent, taking away surface debris from carpets of medium pile as well as dust that has been deposited on floors. However, it's not the most agile robot on the market. Like many others it's not a great climber and has trouble with things like thresholds made of steel transition strips.

Many people purchase robot vacuums for the convenience of setting up a schedule in an app, and then forgetting about them for weeks. But it's important that a robot can do the job, which is the reason why our ZDNet staff looked over and tested a number of the most well-known models to help you find the right one for your home.

4. Shark ION

This round, budget robot looks like a typical robot, but it's an upgrade in terms of performance and features. Its smart mapping system creates 3D and 2D maps of your home and uses those to avoid obstacles and navigate. It's even able to spot common obstacles such as power cords and furniture legs in real-time. This combination of sensors with a bump detector and an infrared sensor that keeps the vacuum away from stairs makes it one of our most flexible vacuums.

It was able to walk over thick shag carpets and was not stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s or Roomba 690-). Its navigation skills were also impressive and its overall score on carpet and bare floors was better than the competition. It was able to pick up 98.5 percent of surface pet hair and litter from our laboratory test samples.

The controls are more basic than the competition's. There is a cleaning button at the top and you can choose to start it using the app or voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also set up a schedule for your daily or weekly cleaning, set areas that are not allowed to be cleaned, and check its history of cleaning. Covered in stylish dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and is attractive in your home. The rear dust bin is easy to empty and removing the filter is just as simple.

5. Eufy 11S

If you're looking to buy a basic low-cost robot vacuum at a low cost, the Eufy11S might be your best bet. It isn't equipped with some of the more advanced features, like digital mapping and Alexa integration, found in higher-end models, but if you don't need these functions, you can save a little cost with this model.

This robot is simple to set up and use. It does not require a smartphone application or Wi-Fi pairing. However it does come with an remote control that allows you to choose between various modes and adjust the suction levels. You can also manually send the robotvac on a cleaning schedule.

In our tests, the 11S was very effective at removing pet hair and dirt on hard floors and carpets with a low pile. Its slim profile made it possible to pass under furniture that is low-hanging and other objects that larger robots are unable to reach. It was also able to easily traverse door thresholds and change between floors and another.

Like other robots, the 11S will be able to suck up objects like cords, drawstrings for hoodies, and cat toys. The manufacturer suggests you avoid this by keeping these objects off the ground and by using a cord organizer whenever possible. iRobot Roomba 990

The Roomba is iRobot’s flagship robot vacuum. It's expensive but it's the best robot vacuum you can purchase. Its self-navigating capabilities and environmental mapping are something to behold. It has more advanced automation than its rivals, for instance the capability to set up virtual boundary markers using its mobile app. While its application is a bit slow and the 980 may spin a bit when rolling over cables, it's still a very capable robot vacuum.

One thing we really like about the 980 is that it uses its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors and visual simultaneous mapping and localisation technology (or vSLAM) to memorise the floor plan of your home. It uses this information to create a consistent, efficient cleaning path through each cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a cleaner vacuum than most competing high-end robot vacuums.

Other features of the 980 include dual multi-surface brushes that grab dirt on floors and carpets and the spinning brush that sweeps debris into the robotic vacuum's bin. The sensor for floor tracking assists in navigating around furniture as well as along edges and steps. Cliff Detect prevents the Roomba from falling. It also automatically returns to the base station to allow for recharging in between sessions. While the 980's battery life and bin size isn't as good as those of some other robot vacuums, it's a reliable and solid machine that can keep your floors clean for hours at a time.
